Horace Wesley Stevenson of Westampton, New Jersey was born on January 15, 1934. His place of birth was Ancon Canal Zone, Panama. His parents were the late John Wesley and the late Elfreda Stevenson. Horace peacefully transitioned to his Heavenly Home on May 26, 2023, after a brief illness. Horace or Steve (as he was called by his friends) was 89 years old.
Horace received his secondary education from La Boca High School. In 1953, after graduation, he enlisted in the United States Army at Fort Amador, Canal Zone.
In 1955, when Horace was on leave, he met the love of his life, Carmen E. Brown. They were married in 1956 and remained in Panama for three years. They were happily married for 66 years and 7 months. From this union, they were blessed with five children, John, Tony, Gary, Carol, and Dexter.
Horace served honorably in the United States Army for twenty-three years. He traveled the world and over the course of his military career, he was stationed in Panama, Germany, France, England, Korea, and the United States. In 1976, he retired as a Sergeant First Class. He was a long-standing member of the American Legion Post 509 in Westampton, New Jersey. He was also a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars in Medford, New Jersey.
After his military career, he obtained his HVAC certification. With this certification he was employed by the State of New Jersey at the New Lisbon Developmental Center. In 1998, Horace retired after 20 years of employment. He retired in an advanced position as an Engineering Supervisor.
Horace was a kind, respectful and upright gentleman. He loved and cared deeply for his family. He was a handyman and was always willing to use his skills to help anyone who needed him. He was a powerfully dedicated veteran who gave of his time, talents, and service to maintain the freedoms we enjoy today. We salute this great man of God for outstanding service.
Horace was preceded in death by his father, John Wesley Stevenson; his mother, Elfreda Stevenson; his brother, Wilbert Stevenson. His favorite dog, Sheba, will be wagging her tail and jumping for joy in anticipation of his arrival.
Horace leaves to cherish his memory, his loving wife Carmen Stevenson: four sons; John Stevenson (Tamika) of Simpsonville, South Carolina, Tony Stevenson of Tampa, Florida, Gary Stevenson of Westampton, New Jersey, and Dexter Stevenson of Newark, New Jersey; one daughter; Carol Stevenson of Columbus, New Jersey; four grandchildren; Jaquelin, Aspen, John Thomas, and Wesley; six great-grandchildren; two sisters, Thelma Massey and Ruth Maxwell; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
He will be missed by all who knew him and loved him, but we find comfort in knowing that he is now resting in the arms of our Savior, Jesus Christ.
