Joseph J. Moore, 73, of Medford, died peacefully and surrounded by his family on Saturday, November 19. The son of the late Joseph T. Moore and Teresa E. Freda (nee O'Callaghan), Joe was a proud 1967 graduate of Cardinal O'Hara High School in Springfield, Pa.—though he loved to tell stories of his schooldays antics and the principal who couldn't wait for the day he graduated.
He was a joker at heart who perfected these tales over time, taking great joy in sharing a good laugh with those around him. But there were some things he chose not to talk about nearly as much as he should have—such as his brave service to our country as a United States Marine in Vietnam. He joined the USMC in 1968 and was deployed to An Hòa, a combat base southwest of Da Nang, in 1969 with the 1st Battalion, 5th Marines as a machine gunner. He became a two-time Purple Heart recipient in the nearly one year he spent between An Hòa and Liberty Bridge.
He carried home deep shrapnel and mental scars, but found great success in what came after: a loving family, supportive friends, and a successful business. After spending many years as an electrical foreman for the Delaware River Port Authority, Joe started his own electrical contracting business, J.J. Moore Electric, in 1998. He retired at the age of 57—but not before donating countless hours of his work to St. Mary of the Lakes School and parish, where he was a dedicated parishioner for 30-plus years and a 3rd degree Knight in the Knights of Columbus.
Joe had a phrase he was fond of: "Growing old ain't for sissies." But as the saying goes, it's not the destination; it's the journey. His family will always remember their trips to the Poconos, reading 'Twas the Night Before Christmas every Christmas Eve, his friendly Eagles/Giants rivalry pranks with the neighbors, and, perhaps most of all, the way he pushed those he loved toward success by handing down his unparalleled work ethic.
Joe is survived by his three children—Colleen (Randall), Brian (Brooke), and Joseph T., his oldest, whose tireless support helped carry him through to the end. He leaves behind four grandchildren—Ella, Riley, Cameron, and Nora—and two brothers, Dennis (Catherine) and Timothy. He is also survived by his ex-wife, Kathleen (nee Kane), to whom he was married for 48 years. Along with his parents, he is predeceased by his brother, Kevin.
Family and friends are invited to greet the family on Saturday, November 26, 2022, from 10-11:30AM, at St. Mary of the Lakes R.C. Church, 40 Jackson Rd., Medford, NJ. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11:30AM at the church.
Burial will be in Lakeview Memorial Park, Cinnaminson, NJ, with Marine Corps Funeral Honors.
